I got the box last weekend and it is now trucking off to sites unspoken. The box and I had a wonderful time. I pulled things out and put them in and pulled them out and petted them and put them back.
When I realized I really ought to just make my picks and add my goodies, I had a tough time. I pulled out two skeins of bulky wool (great for hats), a skein of sock yarn in a light camo and a Vogue Knitting for December. I apologize for the picture, but my knitting-helper, Esau Marie refused to move all evening.
I returned with five skeins of funky yarn (enough for a shrug), some Knitpicks laceweight in a lovely lavender. In fact, there are three skeins of the laceweight. That's over 1200 yards. I also put in a brand new December, 2007, Knit in Style magazine. There are so many lovely things in the box and it weighs quite a bit.
If you have a hernia, get some help! Have fun.

After The Summer From Hades, full of marital discord, mental illness, fiscal crises and endless broken everything (furnace, car, computer, dryer, sink ...) I have finally gotten my act together and the box, she has made like Elvis and left the building.

It came in at 24 lbs, 9 oz, and left at 24 lbs 4 oz or so. Pretty close. I'm quite sure I put in a similar quantity of yarn, so it has to be that the book I put in was much lighter. Yes, I'm feeling guilty over 5 oz. *g*

This is what I narrowed my choice down to, from all of the absolutely lovely yarn in the box.

I certainly could have taken more, far more but I exhibited unusual restraint and narrowed it down to one book and eight skeins.

Of particular delight was the copy of Stitch N Bitch Nation. I've wanted this book forever -- thank you to whoever put it in the box!

My daughter has demanded that I knit something for her from the pink sock yarn and I believe my husband (who, as a matter of fact, is still living and still living here has designs on the grey and blue Opal sock yarn. I'm sort of hoping that the blue sock yarn and the Moda Dea get to be mine.

This is what went back into the box.

There is a copy of Shannon Oakey's "Spin to Knit", three skeins of Cascade 220 (face it, I'm never making Eris, or if I do it won't be in that yarn.) There are four balls of Pingouin something or other -- they look like they've been partially used but I weighed them and they're all intact. Also included is one skein of bright red worsted (a hat?), two skeins of blue chunky weight (more than enough for a scarf) and two (possibly two and a bit) balls of elann baby silk -- enough for a Branching Out scarf, or something similar.

And now ... around and around it goes. Where does it stop?

I'm not telling.

After spending just a few days, the Traveling Stash is almost ready to depart the sunny shores of California for destinations unknown!

Sassy, aka She of Ever Discernable Taste and Inestimible Curiosity Regarding All Things In Boxes, helped me narrow it down the perfect yarns to remain behind with me.

Two fifty-gram balls of Regia sock yarn in a manly colorway for manly socks to be knitted in the near whenever, and a lovely ball of hand-painted mystery lace. Fiber content? Yardage? Weight? It's a mystery, but even so, it's beautiful and it's staying. Along with 1 pattern:

And with every hostage exchange, you gotta give to get, so...

12 balls of linen/cotton blend (enough for a sweater) and 3 patterns.

Next destination? Only the Shadow knows...

Guess what was waiting for me when I got home last night?

Yup, there's yarn in that there box! And it's massive. I'll have to wait until this weekend to go through it all, so it'll be languishing in sunny southern California for the next few days. I'll keep you posted!

After a relaxing vacation, where I did think about the box waiting for me in my dining room, I returned home and made my decision on what to keep and what to put in. I took out some sock yarn, hand dyed yarn, the sock blocker keychain (I've wanted one since the first time I saw one online!), the Eucalan sample and some suede tape yarn for my daughter. What did I put in you ask? Well I want it to be a surprise for the next person but I will say I put in some Lamb's Pride, sock yarn, patterns, hand dyed not by me yarn and some cotton.
The box was mailed early this afternoon. It is making a very short trip and should arrive Monday or Tuesday. It weighed 25 lbs 11.2 oz and cost $14.25 priority mail.

The box arrived this morning. The mailman was all excited to tell me I had a box, a really BIG box! It says #2 on the side so I'll guess it's box number 2. My daughter and I couldn't control ourselves and we went through it right away. Unfortunately we are on our way out of town in like 5 minutes for the rest of the week. I had a lot of fun going through the box and picking a few lovelies. I benefited greatly from having set some things aside before it even got here to go in.

The box, weighing in at 22 lbs., 13 ozs. is on its way to the next lucky fiber friend! It was shipped here for around $16 and today, after the rate hike and a different weight (but not too different), it shipped for $19.

The box arrived today and we wasted no time covering my entire king-size bed with its yarn-y goodness. I'm going to try to pick out my loveys and replacements tonight or tomorrow 'cause my biggest challenge to get it out in a week is getting to the post office.

off to its next stop who-knows-where.

There's a lot in there to tempt a person, but I was fairly restrained this time. I took out one skein of Opal and six skeins of black Cascade 220 (I just couldn't pass up a whole sweater's worth of yarn!).

Lucia came over for a dip into the stash, and took out 2 balls of variegated pink/rose Cotton Fixation and 5 balls of Skacel Kid Merino in a purple/green colorway. She then added this combination of Lanet fingering weight yarns:

My contribution to the box was five skeins of Reynolds Whiskey and two of Moda Dea Sassy Stripe sock yarn.

I wonder where the box will land next?

Well, here's my exchange. I picked out my stuff a couple of weeks ago, but am finally getting around to posting pics. We got home from the hospital last Friday, and are settling in nicely. Jack is doing much better, and is eating and gaining weight like a super star (pics on my blog). So, without further ado...

I picked out these goodies--2 skeins of Knit Picks Essential, a single skein of Lorna's Laces sock yarn in Aslan colorway, and a yummy pumpkin colored single...looks sort of Manos-y.

This stuff went back in...3 skeins of sock yarn and some Crystal Palace splash that I bought to make my neice a scarf...3 years ago. Obviously it's not gonna happen. I also threw in a pair of Brittany Birch dpns, size 2.

So the box (weighing 38 lobs according to my husband) is on its way to the next lucky lady. It may even be there my now. Enjoy.

I had planned on getting the box shipped last week, but I had my baby Wednesday, and he ended up in the NICU. He's doing better, but we still have a few days of recovery ahead of us. The box weighed in at 22 lbs. 2.4 oz., and they charged an extra $2.90 due to the dimensions of the box itself, which is odd because they didn't do that last time and it's the exact same cardboard box. That box is still in decent shape, but it will probably need replacing after a few more visits.

I've had fun with it, and I managed to be super restrained in taking from the box, so I send it along with hopes that everyone else has as much, if not more, fun with this!

All Packed Up and Ready to Go!

Well, I checked out the contents of the box and I was very, very good. I took one skein of Some Assembly Required sock yarn and that's it! I am trying to knit out of my stash through September 30, 2007, and I was bit worried that I'd go crazy when the box arrived due to my self-imposed yarn purchasing restrictions. There were a lot of things that tempted me -- like Zarah, I really had my eye on that Lopi, too -- but I managed to exercise some restraint.

I won't show everything that I put into the box, but I slipped in a few things along with the big contribution, twenty skeins of Debbie Bliss Cotton Denim Aran (still in the yarn shop plastic bags) along with the pattern book for the yarn. Last go round, I put in a few skeins of this and that, so this time I thought I'd contribute enough so that someone could actually make a full sized item.

So, now I'm just waiting for the identity of the next recipient of the box, and it will be off on its next stop!

The STASH has arrived. (Dachshund for scale.)

The STASH arrived on my doorstep two Fridays ago, just as the first wave of freezing rain was starting to fall across the northern Missouri Ozarks. Little did I know, as I eagerly ripped into the box, spread its contents across my living room floor, sort all its contents into little piles, and start to decide what I wanted to keep, that in only a couple of hours my power would go out from the ice storm and not come on again for over a week.

But enough about the friggin' storm already! Luckily, before the lights went out I managed to snap a photo of the box before I started tearing into it.

Yep, that thing is chock-full of good stuff, for all different types of knitting projects. It's not just yarn, either. There's books, needles, patterns for more.

I really wanted to keep that pink Lopi on top, but I couldn't figure out what to do with 6 skeins - too much for a scarf, not enough for a sweater. I guess it would be good for a child's sweater, but I doubt Lucy (my dachshund) would appreciate it. =)

There was so much of the box that I considered keeping, but...

Here's what you're really wondering. What did I take from the STASH?

I know it's not much compared to the massive STASH box, but I'm really happy with what I got:

pink Opal self-striping sock yarn;3 skeins of Some Assembly Required sock yarn (the two pink and green skeins will become knee socks someday!); green Arucania Nature Wools worsted weight; green Cascade 220 (for seaming and edging the Lizard Ridge afghan); red & green sportweight skeins (for my very first (successful) colorwork?!)(I hope.); a sock pattern, darning needles, and Size 5 DPNs.
In consideration for the above-stated chattels, said stashee shall provide and convey the following: (oh wait, I'm not at work. Here's what I put in.)
Some random novelty yarns (they're pretty! Use them for felted bags or Halloween costumes or something); one skein yellow www.handpaintedyarn.com bulky; KnitPicks Wool of the Andes (one green and two orange skeins); two hand-dyed superwash skeins of sock yarn - multi-toned pink and neon green; three skeins Cascade Fixation; gray Opal self-striping sock yarn; 4 skeins of Rowan baby soft, hand-dyed green by me; two samples of Euclan woolwash & 4 blank notecards; handknit scabled scarf from a misguided attempt to sell my knitting (note - people do not want to pay what it's worth!)(Please take and enjoy this - I have several more. It would probably benefit from a good blocking); Several skeins of burgandy OnLine Linie Cup (wool/acrylic)

Whew! That's the STASH rundown! Who will get it next??? Only Annie and I know for sure!

Good news!

The wool is safe and warm in my recently re-relectrified home! I was having a ton of fun pawing through the box (and spreading the yarn all over my living room) last Friday night when the power went out, so there it stayed until today, when I finally had a chance to make my final decisions and pack everything else back into the box.

Late Christmas Present

Let’s first establish that I do have my priorities straight!

I arrived home, after a wonderful Christmas Holiday with my family, late afternoon on Wednesday. My neighbor who had taken care of the animals had kindly brought a big box into the house for me --- Yea the Traveling Stash had arrived!! I opened it as soon as the car was empty – before laundry, food, thank you notes, almost before heat…..what a stash. So many interesting things…I loved looking at all the patterns and took two sock patterns for upcoming projects.

I put in enough Lopi for a child sweater, a couple of Happy Trails, two Knit Picks Essential, a Lorna’s Laces, some Hot Sox, two Kid n Ewe, some really old green something that’s been sitting around way to long and a beaded row counter – this is my ‘must have’ tool – it is wonderful for circular knitting.

I took out the red Wildfoote, two green Some Assembly Required, the STR and an Anne.

I’m ready for next Christmas knitting! The box is full – actually stuffed – with lots of interesting stuff – enjoy!

In Transit

The box is now in transit and should arrive at its next destination within the next week.

Here's what I took out of the box:

It's three skeins of Rowan Kid Soft, destined for a scarf from Scarf Style, and a skein of Karaoke. I don't know what I'll do with that skein, but the colors and the feel of it called out to me.

Here's what I put in:

Two skeins of Koigu KPPPM, two skeins of Knit Picks Ambrosia, two skeins of Knit Picks merino, and a skein of Cascade 220 (which did not make the photo).

The box was in rough shape, so I followed the lead of Sisters before me and taped the postcards to a new box, adding my own postcard. I know this isn't Yarn Aboard and I wasn't obligated to take the box on any adventures, but I did drive around for a few days with it in the back of my car and we drove by a couple of post offices. The first post office had just closed. The second post office was open, but I had to park way down the street and there was no way I could carry the box that distance. (It's not *that* heavy, but I hurt my back.) So, my husband bravely took the box to the post office earlier this week. I think that the joy of having a large box of yarn leave the house was enough to keep him from feeling any anxiety about going out in public carrying a huge box covered with postcards.

The box has arrived at its next destination -- my house!! I'm having a great time looking throught it and deciding what I'm going to put in and take out. I'll post again when I have made my decisions, and I'm hoping to be ready to mail it out next Saturday (November 18th).

I blogged a bit about it here, but I will post my additions and subtractions on this blog unless there are any objections -- if the next recipient wants the changes to the box to be a surprise, then I will keep it a secret. Ann, let me know where to send it!

It's here! It's here! The box came to my house!!!

I had just checked the blog today to see what was going on with the stash, and I read Jennifer's post and looked at her blog to see pictures. When I read that she had put a skein of Socks That Rock into the box, I just about drooled! I have been wanting to try that since I have "heard" so much about it online. I even left a comment about how I CRAVE that skein of yarn, but what were the chances it would still be in the box when I got it?

Even as I was typing that comment, the box was waiting for me at the post office!!! I was so excited when I saw it! I couldn't wait to open it....so I didn't (wait, that is).

Let me tell you, I hunted and hunted for that one skein. I began to worry, because the box had split a seam and I thought maybe the S.T.R. had escaped. Finally I caught sight of it, and now it is sitting here at my keyboard where I can look at it and pet it occassionally. I won't ignore the rest of the box, it's just that I was SO wanting some of this yarn and I couldn't believe the timing of the box's arrival.

Anyway, the box is here. I will ponder the contents over the weekend and probably have it on its way early next week. Here's a picture of my new treasure keeping me company at the comuter and, just for fun, I added some of the knitting quips I've been collecting.

My time with the box

Well, I post wondering where the box is only to find that it was on its way to me! I've blogged about my experience with the box on my blog. I had a great time with it, and it came on the perfect day. It was quite an experience to see the huge size of wooly goodness show up on my doorstep, and then open it up and see all the loved yarn given by generous knitters. I also enjoyed adding my own donation to the big box of yarn love!

That's what I thought when the mailroom called to tell me I had a package. What could it be? Had I ordered something and forgotten? No, I had already received everything I ordered recently. When I picked up the box, I thought, "Wow! When did I place an order this size? Surely, I would remember something like this!" Then it hit me; I was in receipt of the Traveling Stash! As you can see, the parrot is all agog with curiosity. I can hardly wait to tear into it myself. Oh, happy day! :)

Let me start out by saying that I’m such a doofus. That fact is well known to my fambly and friends, but I thought y’all should know that too.

When I joined the Sisterhood, I gave our fearless leader my office address as anything larger than a shoebox delivered to my home has had a tendency in the past to disappear. And then, I promptly forgot that little tidbit. I check in on the Sisterhood blog often, watching the box make its way hither and yon across the country.

Well, this morning, security called to say that a big box had arrived and was waiting for me in the receiving room. I was a bit perplexed. Had I ordered something that I’d forgotten about? (Yes, it has happened before.) Something would come in a big box? No, I’m all caught up on any orders. Whatever could it be? People, at the time, I honestly had no clue.

I wandered my way over to receiving, and there it was. Head slap! It was The Box. For those of you who hadn’t had the joy of receiving it yet—it’s huge! I know, I know, everyone says that, but seriously. IT’S. GINORMOUS. Our security guy asked if I wanted him to carry it out to my car. Heck, no! To my office, and make it snappy mister! (Just kidding; love our security guys, they’re real sweethearts and will help you out at a moment’s notice when you’re in a pickle.)

Obviously, I couldn’t get any work done with all the noise the box was making. The yarn needed attention! After all, it had traveled across the hot, dusty desert to visit me. And the yarn was grateful. The yarn was petted and exercised well over the lunch hour, and got lots of attention from my co-workers. It all went back in the box for the trip home for more petting and exercise tonight.

The box is getting ready to move on. It's had a good time here in ND, but it is getting restless. I'll be helping it to pack today and then it plans to be on the road again tomorrow. I'll miss it dearly.

So the box is on the move. Where will it go next? Be watching, ladies, either Monday or Tuesday it's showing up on someone's doorstep.

Seriously, there's some great stuff here. Enough for entire projects. All the way from hats to good sized shawls. A good choice of sock yarns. I practically had to sit on the box to tape it closed. Then again, I'm not a very efficient packer. But I can assure the next person in line, you will feel like you are unpacking a treasure chest.

I'm going to miss the box. But I'm looking forward to seeing how much it changes by the end of summer.
